During my internship I worked as a Content Creator at a small NGO focused on Harm Reduction for drug users. I was responsible for managing the website, writing the newsletter, and handling social media.

My role

The NGO was small, so I had a lot of freedom to take on different tasks. I wrote a few articles, redesigned the website, helped translate informational materials, and joined meetings and fieldwork on two occasions.

Content creation with a sociologist's perspective

In this role, I used my sociological skills to communicate with different audiences. I had to change my tone, vocabulary, and content depending on who I was writing for.

Messages for marginalised drug users were different from those aimed at social workers or the general public. My sociology background helped me understand the characteristics of each audience and adapt my content for them.

What's next

I want to specialise in drug policies and Harm Reduction in the future, so I used my time there to think about how the organisation works from a sociological point of view. I looked at the organisation through ideas like network sociology, functionalism, and theories of power.

This helped me understand the principles behind Harm Reduction, how the organisation applies them, and how they explain their goals to the public in a way that is easy to understand, even when people are skeptical.

This internship gave me a great opportunity to apply what I have learned in sociology and get more experience in a field I want to work in.
