  • Profile

Anna van Duin is Assistant Professor of Private Law at the University of Amsterdam, specialising in Civil Procedure, Contract Law and Tort Law - with a focus on access to justice and effective remedies in the context of EU (consumer) law, (online) dispute resolution mechanisms and digital transformation of the civil justice system.

In October 2020 she defended her PhD thesis (Cum Laude) on effective judicial protection under Article 47 of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights in unfair terms cases before the CJEU, Spanish and Dutch civil courts. Shortly after, she joined the Digital Legal Lab, an interuniversity research centre on law & digital technologies (sectorplandls.nl), as well as the Digital Transformation of Decision-Making research initiative at the Amsterdam Law School (digitaldecision-making.net).

Anna is deputy director of the Amsterdam Centre for Transformative Private Law (ACT). She is also a member of the editorial board of 'Tijdschrift voor Civiele Rechtspleging' (TCR), a front-rank Dutch legal journal on civil litigation. She coordinates the Master course 'Practicum privaatrechtelijke rechtspraktijk' as part of Amsterdam Law Practice, a programme for experiential learning.

After graduating from Leiden University (LL.M in Civil Law, Cum Laude) and the University of Oxford (Magister Juris), Anna has worked for more than 6 years as an attorney-at-law at Pels Rijcken, specialising in civil (procedural) law and (private) international law. She was one of the co-editors of the 24th edition of Hugenholtz/Heemskerk (2015), a leading handbook on Dutch civil procedure.
