Emile Zitzke is an associate professor at the University of the Witwatersrand School of Law in Johannesburg, South Africa, commonly referred to as “Wits University.” He is delighted to be an ACT Visiting Fellow from May until September 2024.
At Wits University, Professor Zitzke primarily teaches courses on the law of delict (torts). His research interests lie at the intersection of delict, human rights, and legal theory, with a particular focus on “transformative constitutionalism”—a framework of increasing importance in South Africa’s post-apartheid legal system. This perspective also fuels his interest in the work of the Centre for Transformative Private Law. Further details about his research can be accessed here.
During his fellowship at the ACT, Professor Zitzke’s primary focus will be on examining the relationship between civil defamation in the online world, constitutional rights to freedom of expression and human dignity, and transformative constitutionalism.
