From September 18th - October 30th 2023, Miika Hiltunen will join ACT as a visiting researcher.

Miikka is a Doctoral Researcher in law at the Erik Castrén Institute of International Law and Human Rights, University of Helsinki. In his PhD thesis titled “To Rein in Big Tech”: The Legal Governance of Online Platforms in the European Union, he is examining the European Union’s past and ongoing endeavors to govern social media and other online platforms. The thesis explores and highlights the productive relationships between EU law, online platforms, and corporate power. Miikka’s research interests include EU law, law and digitalisation, data governance law, law and political economy, and legal theory.

Miika wanted to pursue a research visit within the ACT fellowship program because of the Centre's focus on innovative and also critical approaches to transnational private law, particularly EU law. He saw the program as an opportunity to engage with enthusiastic scholars who share intersections with his research approach and topic, but also as a chance to learn from research conducted at the Centre that differs from his own.
