About the speaker

Elbert de Jong is Professor of Private Law at the Utrecht Centre for Accountability and Liability Law and the Molengraaff Institute for Private Law. He specializes in the law of obligations, particularly liability law.

His research takes a multidisciplinary approach to societal challenges shaping private law, including precaution in liability, innovation, climate change, government liability and human rights, civil procedure, causation, and judicial decision-making. He frequently lectures nationally and internationally, is an editor of the Nederlands Tijdschrift voor Burgerlijk Recht, and serves as a deputy judge at the Arnhem-Leeuwarden Court of Appeal.
